Landport Lodge No. 1776

Freemasonry in Purbrook, Hampshire

Landport Lodge takes its name from Landport an area of Portsmouth from where the Lodge originated. We use an image of Landport Gate to pay homage to our roots as we have moved our meetings from location to location over the years.  ‘Landport Gate’ was the former principal entrance into the fortified town of Portsmouth on the north side of the walled city and was built to protect Portsmouth from attack. Originally there were five such gates built around the city and Landport Gate is the only town gate to remain. The present gate was built in 1760 It is built of Portland stone, and was originally flanked by ramparts, with a moat in front. When the fortifications were demolished in 1875 it was re-erected where it stands today
